Influenve of Panax Ginseng upon thymic DNA synthesis in mice

Abstract
A study was planned to evaluate the influence of Panax Ginseng and AGTH upon DNA-synthetic activity of the thymus.
Sixty male albino mice (body weight: 18-20gm) were equally divided into 6 groups, which were designated as the control, the saline, the ginseng, the control-ACTH, the saline-ACTH and the ginseng¡þACTH groups according to the drugs they received. The thymic DNA-synthetic activity was measured autoradiographically using IH-thymidine.
Results obtained were as follows:
1. The radioactive index (number of labeled thymic cells in 1,000 cell counts) of the ginseng and the saline groups were slightly less than that of the control group, but the differences among the 3 groups were not significant.
2. The radioactive index of the control-ACTH group was significantly less than that of the control group.
3. The radioactive index of the ginseng-ACTH and the saline-ACTH group were significantly higher than those of the control, the saline, the ginseng, and the control-ACTH groups. Moreover, the radioactive index of the ginseng-ACTH group was significantly higher than that of the saline-ACTH group.
The inferences from the above results are that the ginseng has no apparent influence upon thymic DNA synthesis in normal mice, but that under the influence of ACTH, the drug not only counteracts the suppressive action of ACTH upon thymic DNA synthesis but actually facilitates the synthetic activity.
